Arrival/Dismissal Procedures
Entry Procedures
- Keidan students and visitors will use door 14 to enter and exit the building. All other doors are not to be used to enter the building.
- The first period begins at 7:30 a.m.; all students will be escorted to their homerooms by staff and make preparations for the school day. Breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m.
- Parents dropping off students must sign in at door 14/security station. A staff member will then be notified of your child’s arrival and will report to the main office to escort your child to their homeroom.
- Parent/Guardian visits to classrooms: While all parents/guardians are encouraged to visit their child (ren) classrooms during the school day at Keidan. We must ensure that academic and behavioral student expectations are not disrupted. If a parent/guardian would like to visit their child (ren) classroom they are encouraged to schedule a date and time with the classroom teacher prior to their arrival.
- Students are to remain on the bus/cab until 7:30 a.m. Students are not to enter the building before 7:30 a.m. without parent/guardian supervision. Parents/Guardians are asked to cooperate by understanding that supervision is unavailable before 7:30 a.m.
- School Hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-2:40 p.m.
- Early dismissal (Half days) 7:30 a.m.-11:40 a.m.
Dismissal From School
- Parents picking up their child(ren) must sign in at the door 14/security station to let office staff know of entry.
- Parents/Guardians wishing to sign a student out of school must present a valid Michigan Driver’s license or State Identification card. The person’s name must also appear on the child’s computerized record in order for the student to be released.
- A staff member will then be notified of your child’s dismissal and will report to the main office with your child(ren)
Early Dismissal From School
- In case of an emergency requiring early dismissal, the parent/guardian must make the request in writing and plan to come into the office and sign the child out of school. Parents/Guardians wishing to sign a student out of school must present a valid Michigan Driver’s license or State Identification card. The person’s name must also appear on the child’s computerized record in order for the student to be released.
Bell Schedule
Mondays through Fridays, the academic day begins at 7:30 AM and ends at 2:40 PM
Hour Monday-Friday
Entry 7:30 a.m.
1st Period 7:30 a.m.-8:25 a.m.
2nd Period 8:25 a.m.-9:20 a.m.
3rd Period 9:20 a.m.-10:15 a.m.
4th Period 11:00-11:55 a.m. (A Lunch)
4th Period 11:55-12:50 p.m. (B Lunch)
5th Period 12:55 p.m.-1:55 p.m.
6th Period 1:55 p.m.-2:40 p.m.
Dismissal 2:40 p.m.
All students and families enter and exit through door 14 located at the back of the school building.
Half-day dismissal is at 11:40 a.m.
School Dress Code
Our school does not require a uniform, however, students must abide by this dress code:
General requirements
- Students may be required to wear certain types of clothing, usually for safety reasons, while participating in classes such as physical education, shop, chemistry, etc., or in curricular and extracurricular classes or activities such as band, choir, dance, drama, and theater.
- Students are responsible for keeping themselves and their clothes neat and clean.
- Students may wear their hair in any style they choose.
- Students may wear headdress (such as hats, religious headwear, hoodies, etc.) if it allows the face to be visible to staff and does not interfere with the line of sight of any student or staff.
- Students may wear PPE (masks, gloves) to continue to guard against COVID-19.
Students May Not Wear
- Styles of clothes that endanger themselves or other students.
- Bedtime attire such as pajamas, undershirts, or undergarments as outerwear.
- Students’ clothing or tattoos may not display statements or pictures that are related to the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco products, or sex, or that promote hate and/or violence or signify gang affiliations.
- Attire that may be considered weapons, including but not limited to chain belts or wallet chains.
- Jewelry or similar artifacts that are obscene or may cause disruptions to the educational environment.
- Hair rollers or hair curlers.
- Flip-flops, house slippers, steel-toe-shoes or boots, or any other type of footwear that could constitute a safety hazard.
Parent Academy
DPSCD recently launched The Parent Academy – a program that promotes parental involvement that supports student and family success. Expected to serve over 7,000 parents and caregivers, The Parent Academy offers FREE classes, training and workshops in schools, libraries, community centers and faith-based institutions across Detroit. The mission of The Parent Academy is to provide the necessary tools and skills to build capacity and confidence in parents in order to support students academically, socially and emotionally.
The Parent Academy focuses on three key pillars:
- Student Achievement – workshops and activities that provide strategies and tools for parents to support academic achievement at home and in school
- Personal and Professional Development – workshops that build confidence while addressing basic needs, employment, family support, financial literacy and goal setting for the healthy development of families
- Parenting/Advocacy – workshops for parents and caregivers to build and increase their effectiveness in advocating and leading on behalf of children

All Parent Academy courses are free of charge and designed for parents, caregivers and community members. Students are welcome to attend along with their families if appropriate. Dates, times and locations are accurate at time of publication; courses listed in this guide are subject to change.
